M Senthilkumar, Chairman, SIMA has written to Babhubhai B Bokhiriya, Cabinet minister of Water Resources, Agriculture, Animal Husbandry, Fisheries and Cow protection, alleging that some ginners were mixing cotton waste in the virgin cotton, with the motive to yield more profit and earn some quick bucks. He has also said that the adulteration of cotton is affected the image of Gujarat and is also undermining the efforts put in by the farmers to grow cotton not only in the domestic market but also in the International arena.

M Senthilkumar also stated that the SIMA member mills were sourcing 60 to 70 lakh bales from Gujarat, and due to the adulterated cotton being produced by the ginners in the state these mills have now reduced the volume of purchase from the state, which has reduced by 40 to 50 per cent. Now the mills have started sourcing cotton from other states and have also signed a contract to import significant volumes for imports from countries like West Africa.

SIMA’s Senthilkumar informed that though Gujarat produces about 120 lakh bales of cotton it can only consume 15 lakh bales and the remaining had to be used predominantly by the mills in Tamil Nadu and in other parts of the country.

Gujarat was one of the top cotton-producing states in the country — 108 lakh bales in 2014-15.

According to the Cotton Corporation of India (CCI), the total production in the country during the season was 390 lakh bales, against 370 lakh bales in 2013-14.
