National Bureau of Statistics of China has revealed that total cotton output in 31 autonomous regions and municipalities in China, including Xinjiang, the main cotton producing province, declined by 4.6 per cent or 260,000 tonnes in 2016 as against last year.

The total cotton output accounted for 5,343,000 tonnes in 2016. The decrease was despite the increase in yield per unit area. The total cotton sown area stood at 3,376,100 thousand hectares, down by 11.1 per cent or 420,500 thousand hectares compared to prior year.
